80th Annual Family Picnic

The 79th annual Govier Family Picnic and Reunion was held Sunday August 7, 2011, with a total of 15 family members attending. Elected president for 2012 was Keith Govier. Vice president is Galen Govier. Secretary/Treasurer is Gordon Govier.

The 75th annual reunion, in 2007, featured the release of a newly published Govier family history edited by Donna Jean [Govier] Teegardin, of Tempe, Arizona. Donna began collecting family information for a junior English class project at Lancaster High School in 1952. Her volume greatly expands an earlier Govier family history compiled by George Sanders Govier in the 1930’s. The 800-page history traces the roots of the Govier family in Devonshire, England, back to 1570. Copies of the family history were presented to the Schreiner Memorial Library in Lancaster and the Wisconsin State Historical Society. Read the 2007 News Release

The annual Govier Picnic and Family Reunion is always held the first Sunday in August at Marsden Park in Fennimore, Wisconsin. For ideas, suggestions, contributions, feedback, volunteering, or ideas for 2012: contact Gordon Govier, Govier family secretary.

Govier Geography
Govier Road in Wilkes Barre PA is a notorious address which fairly frequently ends up on the local police blotter. Now comes word of problems related to Govier's Lane in Watchet, Somerset County UK. But what's a pong?

___

The First Annual Govier Picnic and Family Reunion was held at the park at Klondike Spring near Lancaster, Wisconsin, on August 7, 1932. It was organized by Gladys Budd and Edna Govier. Mamie Govier was appointed chairman for the following year, according to family records. Attendance: 48. The following year it was held at Marsden Park in Fennimore, Wisconsin, attendance: 64. While the picnic moved around from Klondike Springs to Schreiner Park back to Marsden Park over the next ten years, it has always been held on the first Sunday in August. Finally the decision was made to settle permanently at Marsden Park in Fennimore, where it's now held the first Sunday of every August.

Early Govier picnics included a program of entertainment. Minutes for the 1940 picnic, presided over by President Ora Govier, indicate 106 attendees. The oldest person present, James Govier of Patch Grove, was born on November 11, 1861. The program included a Tonette/Clarinet duet, a tap dance, a talk about a visit to the old country (Devonshire, England) by Mrs. Joseph Casey, and Glen Govier "stung by a bumble bee." The Goviers sang America the Beautiful and Auld Lang Syne before dinner.
