THE BOOK & THE SPADE TOURS: An invitation

For more than twenty-five years The Book & The Spade radio program has been offering listeners "backgrounders on the Bible," describing the latest discoveries and developments in Biblical Archaeology. We have featured over 200 of the world’s top archaeologists and Bible scholars while periodically offering exclusively designed Book & The Spade Holyland Study Tours. A Study Tour is more than a pilgrimage, it’s a chance to see the traditional holy sites along with the most important archaeological sites that are constantly refreshing our understanding of the Biblical stories that are so important to our faith.

On this, our eighth tour, we will be traveling to some new locations that have been the scene of some exciting new discoveries. Sites new to this tour include Khirbet Qeiyafa, overlooking the Elah Valley, where what is thought to be the oldest example of Hebrew writing was found in 2008. This site is changing the way archaeologists and Bible scholars view the 10th century B.C., the time of King David. Another new stop on the tour is Magdala, previously a drive-by site on the northwest shore of the Sea of Galilee. At Magdala archaeologists have recently found remains of a first century synagogue, probably a synagogue visited by Jesus during his ministry. In addition we'll be visiting famous archaeological sites in Egypt and Jordan that relate to the Biblical story.

Our first Study Tour* was in 1985, just two years after The Book & The Spade began. Our next tour was seven years later, in 1992. There were five more tours after that, the last one was in 2008. If you would like to get on our list to receive more information on our tour, contact: Gordon Govier, scribe@broadcast.net. Meanwhile, you can keep up with the latest archaeological discoveries and developments by tuning in to THE BOOK & THE SPADE weekly radio program and podcast. You can listen to the latest program here.

* Don’t be intimidated by the term “study tour.” All that means is that we are committed to making this trip as meaningful as possible for people who love the Bible. There are no tests and no pre-requisites. But we recognize the fact that your mind can only handle so much of a new experience so we work to help you prepare for the tour, and provide in-depth resources during the tour. We want to give you the best tour possible with a small, flexible tour group along with top quality guides and resources. We believe a tour like ours is a cost-effective investment in your spiritual growth as a believer and an experience you will remember and cherish for the rest of your life. This is not a typical Holyland tour.
