2004 SCRIBE AWARDS go to KCBI & WMHK

The judges for the annual SCRIBE contest for news reporting in Christian radio have had a front row seat for the continually improving quality of local news coverage in Christian radio.
... KCBI-FM in Dallas, winner of a number of awards in competition with Texas secular stations, has established itself as the news leader in Christian radio. Morning news anchor Sharon Geiger's September 17th, 7:30am newscast, beat out all of the other entries, including one from her boss, L.B. Lyon, to take the 2004 SCRIBE newscast award.
... WMHK-FM news director Bob Holmes took the 2004 SCRIBE feature award with the powerful report on his visit to the home of Keith Clayton, two days after the murder of his wife. The accused murdered was their adopted teen-age son, whom they had been home schooling. The feature aired as part of WMHK's weekly public affairs program, "Vantage Point."
... The feature competition was extremely close, as is usually the case. The judges praised Geiger's KCBI entry recapping the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster and the "Eye on Atlanta" 2-part feature focusing on the Georgia state flag dispute, submitted by WAFS news director Cheryle Ward.
... "This was some of the best journalism in the past 14 years (of the contest)," said the judges. "They can compete with anything produced by the top-rated secular stations."
... The 2004 SCRIBE College Feature award went to Jeni Jewell, a senior at Spring Arbor University, for her interview with well-known Detroit Tigers baseball announcer Ernie Harwell. The judges liked the flow of the discussion from Harwell's baseball career to his Christian faith.
... Since this was the last SCRIBE contest, I would like to thank the judges who have chosen the winners for most of the past 14 years of competition. They are Tom Bier, General Manager and former news director of WISC-TV in Madison Wisconsin, a past president of the Radio Television News Directors Association; and Wayne Corey, a former radio and TV news director, now executive director of Wisconsin Independent Businesses.
...The SCRIBE awards have been highlighting outstanding radio news reporting in Christian radio every year since 1989. The 2004 SCRIBE awards were the final awards given out by SCRIBE.
